New Car Test Drive Team Bryan T. McMahq n and Chris O'Connor
Don't just go 2014 Tundra,
go Platinum!
By BRYAN T. McMAHON
Times On Wheels Columnist
All my guy friends will love driving the 2014 Toyota
Tundra Platinum Crewmax 5.7 liter V8 4x2. I did.
As a group, I would not pre-
sume to tell them what to buy
and what not to buy. They are
big boys, and very independent.
But because they are friends, I
would want to sit down the ones
who are serious about making
the purchase and have a heart-
to-heart talk before they plunk
down any of their hard-earned.
: Yes, this is arguably the fin-
est pickup truck they will ever
drive. Yes, I can toss out some of
the names of those who should
make the purchase now if they
are so inclined.
Mike Whitlow owns two
Mack Truck dealerships and is
a hands-on owner who doesn't
flinch at doing his own running
between St. Rose and Breaux
Bridge, hauling all the big and
bulky items a man with that
sort of business can be expected
to transport.
My buddy Doug Daigle
should stop by Harry McK-
neely's the day before he stops
working, because he is one who
will need an undertaker the day
he stops taking on construction
projects that would cause you or
me, and many of his construc-
tion business competitors, to go
all wobbly in the knees at the
thought of the really big proj-

ects Doug takes on as a matter
of course.
That is why he should buy
this truck for his son Joey who
is taking over the business be-
gun by Joey's grandfather and
namesake.
This Tundra is perfect for the
man who needs to take his top
workers out in the morning to
assign them to portions of the
construction project while he
explains the big picture to them.
There is plenty of room for bur-
ly big men to ride in plenty of
comfort in the cab, with lots of
bed for cargo, towing capacity
to drag along a heavy machine,
and strength to go anywhere
Joey needs to go.
Look for a really serious dis-
cussion to ensue if Doug calls
and mentions to Joey that he
will be needing the Tundra to
take Joey's beautiful and brainy
morn Johanna (you know her as
Sissy) to lunch because even the
stitching on this black leather
interior is worthy of a brain
surgeon's easy chair, and she
deserves at least that.
Dr. Randy Howes has a
ranch, so he might want to buy
a Tundra like I drove for this
past week. And if that's what he
wants, I sure do not recommend
standing in his way, ever! Even
if his true motive is to have this
fine steed of steel pictured be-
hind him on a Doc Randolph al-
bum cover, I wouldn't begin to
counsel him otherwise.
But guys, if your work day
means commuting to a job on
the river, or in the city, and you
won't haul anything until your
kid sister needs help moving
into an apartment, get real!
This is a meaningful truck. It
gets 13-miles-per-gallon in city
driving and takes up some seri-
ous space in the company park-
ing lot. I would still recommend
you buy a Toyota, just not this
particular Toyota. Now it's none
of my business, I'm just sayin'
For those of you who do need
a really serious truck, and you
have the bucks to invest to make
the big money, let me tell you
what you get for your $48,475.
That's what my test drive Tun-
dra has on its price tag.
The 2014 Platinum Crew-
max Toyota is powered by a 5.7
liter I-Force V8 dual overhead
cam 381 horsepower engine
with variable valve timing with
intelligence capable of generat-
ing 402 pound per foot traction,
a 6-speed automatic transmis-
sion with sequential shifting.
Needless to mention, you get a
heavy duty battery and alterna-
tor and 7-pin connector, auto-
matic limited slip differential,
independent coil-spring high-

TORRANCE, Calif. - Toyota
Financial Services (TFS) / Lex-
us Financial Services (LFS) is
kicking off its third annual "Go-
Green" campaign, encouraging
customers to sign up for paper-
less billing statements; allowing
them to receive monthly emails
when their bill is due, rather
than traditional paper state-
ments sent through the mail.
Between November 1, 2013,
and January 31, 2014, for ev-
ery customer that signs up to
"GoGreen," TFS/LFS will do-
nate $5 to Boys & Girls Clubs
of America (BGCA), up to a to-
tal of $200,000. In addition to
the convenience of online ac-
count management, customers
may also access and pay bills
through the company's mobile
website and smartphone apps.
For its third year, TFS/LFS is
hoping to repeat the enormous
success of its previous two cam-
paigns. The first year, the com-
pany surpassed its targeted goal
when a record 239,450 custom-
ers signed up for the program.
"Our second annual campaign
received such an overwhelm-
ing response, that, only two
weeks into the ll-week cam-
paign, we had already met our
goal of raising $100,000 for
Boys &Girls Clubs of Amer-
ica," said Mike Groff, Presi-
dent and CEO of TFS. "This
inspired us to double our com-
mitment, and Toyota Financial
Services ended up donating a
total of $200,000. We hope to
do the same again this year."
Every day, BGCA members
across the nation participate
mounted double wishbone front
suspension with stabilizer bar,
trapezoidal outboard mounted
shocks, power-assisted 4-wheel
disc brakes, 20 inch alloy wheels
with P-rated
Tires, and so much more.
In other words, I can't imag-
ine you leaving this vehicle run-
ning in your driveway just in
case you might need to run to a
shop for two scoops of ice cream.
Did I mention this is a really se-
rious truck?
And obviously I am not ad-
dressing my female readers,
who as a class, have way too
much sense to buy this wonder-
ful guy truck.
For the rest of us, it doesn't
hurt to dream...
Incidentally, base price is
$44,270. There are three items
listed separately under "Op-
tional Equipment" that I believe
you should include in your pur-
chase: a blind spot monitor with
a rear cross-traffic alert ($500),
running boards because I need-
ed them to get behind the wheel
and I stand 6'2" ($345), and a
bedliner ($365). That brings us
to $48,475 including the pesky
$995 you get nicked for "Deliv-
ery Processing and Handling."
