Football, baseball, soccer
leaders to coordinate seasons

If the commissioners of the three
major local athletic organizations have
their own way, youths in South Tangi-
pahoa parish will be able to participate
in more than one sport at the same time
without having to worry about conflicting
schedules.
For the past two weeks, Ronnie
Gregoire of the South Tangipahoa
Youth Soccer Association Inc.. Steve
Waguespack of the Little Conference
Football League, and AI Courouleau of
the Dixie Youth Baseball League have
been trying to get together to formulate
a system whereby the schedules of their
respective sports would not conflict.
Thus, affording young athletes the
opportunity to compete in any, or all.
without fear of overlapping
commitments to the sports in which
they participate.
'"e've talked about tlis-quite
S " " '
erlous]y m recent weeks, stated
Gregoire recently, "but due to our own
personal commitments, we haven't had
an opportunity to get together in the
past couple of weeks to iron out all of
the details."
If such a coup can be accomplished, it
would give parents leeway between the
seasons to prepare their children for the
following season. It would also allow for
non-contlicting registrations in each
sport.
"As a father of three active children
competing in each of these sports. I can
fully understand the problems which
parents and their children encounter."
said Gregoire. "I alo know how
expensive it can be to outfit children for
each sport, and the difficulty of trying to
be in two or three places at the same
time. It's impossible!"
It won't be an easy task which faces
the three commissioners. If, however, it
can be successfully accomplished, it
could prove to be the shot in the arm
which would boost enrollment in all
three sports.
Gregoire expects a larger enrollment
in soccer in the 1986 spring session,
and the other two organizations could
expect the same if children are free to
participate in unconflicting schedules.
If there would be any one major
conflict in the proposed scheduling of
seasons in amateur youth athletics in
the parish, it would come only from
players participating in state champion-
ships in their respective sports. This,
however, would likely be minimal since
post-season play would involve a
minimum, rather than maximum,
amount of players.

Fine desk awaits new doctor
Staff Report
Dr. Eric D. Oriener M.D. will have a
fine roll top desk waiting for him when
he completes medical school and is
ready to start his practice.
The fine work of machine sculpted
magnolia, custom crafted piece-by-
piece now rests on blocks in the
backyard shop of Ponchatoula's top
woodworker, Raby Skelton, waiting for
the moment the doctor graduates from
LSU, before that if the scholar needs it.
"This is really a belated wedding
present to my son-in-law," said Skelton,
stealing a fond glance over to a desk
that would do Mark Twain proud, a

Where did he get the design for t'-
complicated cuts that would allow boel
to fit in board and move along the tre ck
through a lifetime of openings aid
closings? "Up here," came the sire de
answer from the carpenter who was
indicating his own cranium.
"The closest I came to a design was a
picture in a catalogue. 1 built one before
this fol Robert Jackson," he said.
The magnolia desk is 64 inches by 33
inches and stands 51 inches from
bottom to top, finished with a fruitwood
stain and sealer.
