Minuteman Club needs 25 to keep city's flag flying Staff Report It will take less than 25 new members to enable Ponchatoula's Minuteman Club to keep the nation's largest American flag flying over the city. And Monday night members of the club agreed to try to bring the fledgling club to its full complement of 100 members. More than 76 members had signed the club's initial roster as of Monday (see attached list), each paying annual dues of $25, enough money to maintain the flag night and day for the entire year. Applications for membership are available at The Ponchatoula Times, Paul's Care, or by contacting Minute- man President Ronnie Perrin or any member of the club. In order to save for posterity the original Ponchatoula flag sewn by local ladies dubbed Ponchatoula's Betsy Rosses, the club ordered three giant flags made, each just inches smaller than the nation's largest, sewn by the local ladies. These have already arrived and will soon take their turn in succession flying above the city, with the original hand- sewn flag getting more of a rest from the fabric ripping winds atop the microwave tower converted to flagpole. The cost of paying for the flags, main- taining them, keeping them properly illuminated and keeping up the ropes and hardware associated with the nation's largest flag will require a full 100 members to belong to the Minute- men Club, Pert'in reminded members at Monday's meeting. Unlike other local clubs and organiza- tions, The Minutemen Club should only have to meet four times a year and, if the membership is there to support the project, Perrin said that no fundraisers will have to be held. Of course, members who are available locally will be called upon on occasion to raise or lower the flag, for ceremonies, repairs, in case of foul weather, or for similar reasons; with the necessary speed of these operations giving the club its name, The organization is open to old and young, men and women, and will be closed at the ceiling membership of 100. Current members of the club (any one of whom may be contacted for membership information) include: Terrorism ends college tour A classical tour of Greece sponsored by the SLU Honors Program has been cancelled because of terrorism. "1 plan to walk main street with Mrs. Violet Collier (head of city beautifi- cation), Street Superintendent Doug O'Bannon and others who can give expert advice. The problem we now have is that the space between the sidewalk and the new street is being used by city water and sewage lines, which are only two feet below the surface. "[ believe the solution." said Gideon. "will be to ask private landowners for permission to plant 15 to 20 feet tall on their property next to the road. We will also be asking clubs to help sponsor the tree planting," said Gideon. Mrs. Collier explained that even though she has had some offers of donations of live oaks that it appears doubtful this type of tree will be able to be planted due to the limitations on space, Excerpts follow of Sen. Gerry Hinton's letter to Graves, credited with being at least partially responsible for the breakthrough Monday. and for Graves' latest promise to }et Ponchatoula keep its angle parking: Mr. Robert Graves, Secretary Department of Transportation and Development Post Office Box 94245 Baton Rouge, La. 70804-9245 Dear Bob, I am writing at the request of the Honorable Charles Gideon, Mayor of Ponchatoula who is deeply concerned about a pending proposal from your department. It seems that your department is planning on changing the parking of the 100 block of Pine St. in Ponchatoula from angle parking to parallel parking. This area has had angle parking since its beginning. The merchants of this street are ]00% in favor of the angle parking. An agreement was made last year with your department relevant to this issue. It was agreed that since this was a I00 foot wide street the angle parking would be allowed to continue. Bob. so much of our world is changing due to modern construction, doesn't it seem feasible to allow a community that has the space the privilege of being old-fashioned? With your permission I will call your office Monday to discuss this further with you for as I understand it, the striping of the street is scheduled for the beginning of the week. I would greatly appreciate your kind consideration in this matter. Thanking you in advance, I am Gerry E. Hinton, D.C.
