Regional Cancer Facility
The Cancer, Radiation and Research
Foundation will build a cancer treatment
center in Hammond. The new center
will serve all or parts of five parishes--
eastern Livingston Parish (including
Livingston), St. Helena, western St.
Tammany (including Covington), Wash-
ington, and, of course, Tangipahoa.
Cancer patients in these areas, as well
as the southwestern portion of Mississippi,
will no longer have to travel to New
Orleans, Baton Rouge or farther for
treatment. The Hammond center,
which will be operated as a sister facility
of the Mary Bird Perkins Radiation
Treatment Center in Baton Rouge, will
be constructed on site at Seventh Ward
General Hospital in Hammond, but will
be owned and operated as an indepen-
dent facility by the Cancer, Radiation
and Research Foundation.
This decision to build this new facility
is particularly newsworthy in light of
Louisiana's high incidence of cancer.
According to the National Cancer Insti-
tute, Louisiana ranks seventh among all
states in cancer mortality. NC] statistics
show that thirteen of the worst 31
counties and parishes for lung cancer
among males are in Louisiana.
The Ponchatoula High School
Choir was one of several community
groups performing at the Community
Center Friday. A professional tape of
the concert is expected to go on sale
Monday.
